Our First Celebration Scheduled For 6/13/2025. Media Will Be Posted.
Matthew Garcia lived with heart, humor, and a quiet strength that left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him. Born with Down syndrome, he faced life with joy and compassion, never letting a diagnosis define his potential. As a beloved son, brother, tío, friend, and Special Olympics athlete, Matthew was a source of light for his family and community—a real-life superhero in every sense.
Throughout his life, birthdays were a cherished tradition for Matthew. Each celebration was filled with cake, laughter, and the warmth of family and friends. Yet, for many adults with special needs, birthdays often pass without celebration or recognition. That contrast helped shape this project’s purpose.
On March 15, 2025, at the age of 40, Matthew passed away due to complications from the flu that progressed into acute respiratory distress syndrome. Even in his final moments, he continued to give—donating both kidneys to individuals in need. That same spirit of generosity is the foundation of Matthew’s Gift: A Superhero’s Birthday Legacy.
This initiative was created to honor Matthew’s life by celebrating others like him. In partnership with Advocacy Partners Agency and supported by his case manager and therapy team, the project hosts monthly birthday celebrations for adults with special needs who may not otherwise be recognized. Participants are nominated by their Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), with a special focus on individuals without strong family support or those who’ve never experienced a birthday celebration.
Each event includes:
A festive, decorated gathering space
Cake, ice cream, and a shared meal
Thoughtfully chosen, personalized gifts
A hand-signed birthday card featuring Matthew’s own artwork and signature
Through this project, Matthew’s legacy lives on—bringing joy, dignity, and belonging to those who deserve to feel seen, valued, and celebrated.
